Attorney General Merrick Garland, in an unannounced visit to Ukraine, reaffirmed the U.S. commitment to help the war-torn nation identify, apprehend, and prosecute those involved in "war crimes" and "atrocities."

In a video tweeted out by Anthony Coley, spokesman for the Justice Department, Garland said: "I'm here to express the unwavering support of the United States for the people of Ukraine in the midst of the unprovoked and unjust Russian invasion.

"I'm here to continue our discussions ... about the actions the United States is taking to assist the Ukrainian authorities in holding accountable those responsible for the atrocities for the war crimes that the entire world has seen.

"The United States is sending an unmistakable message: There is no place to hide. We and our partners will pursue every avenue available to make sure that those who are responsible for these atrocities are held accountable."

Garland was in Ukraine to meet with Prosecutor General Iryna Venediktova and discuss U.S. efforts to help Ukraine bring war criminals to justice, according to CBS News.

The network news reported that Garland had pledged support for Ukraine's efforts against war criminals earlier this year.

"This Department has a long history of helping to hold accountable those who perpetrate war crimes," he had told reporters. "We are assisting international efforts to identify and hold accountable those responsible for atrocities in Ukraine. And we will continue to do so.'
