Gallup Survey: 72 Percent of Voters Want to Fire Most of Congress

A new Gallup survey shows anti-incumbent sentiment has reached a fever pitch with 72 percent of voters believing most members of Congress should be given pink slips.

Only 22 percent of registered voters questioned by Gallup believe lawmakers "deserve re-election."

The throw-the-bums-out sentiment is higher than it has been in more than two decades, reports Politico.

In fact, the percentage of voters who think their own congressman should go back to Washington is 50 percent. In 2012, 59 percent wanted their representatives returned.

Gallup, in squeezing past numbers, reports: "The relatively low percentages of American voters saying members of Congress deserve re-election suggest that incumbents may be less successful than usual in winning re-election this year, being vulnerable to defeat by a challenger from their own party in their primary election or from the opposition party in the general election."

The margin of error in the survey is plus or minus 3 percentage points.

With the majority of Americans opposed to Obamacare and thinking healthcare has gotten worse in the nation, incumbents who voted for the Affordable Care Act are facing especially tough challenges.

Last month, Americans for Prosperity took out ads against Democratic incumbents in four states, including Sens. Mary Landrieu in Louisiana, and Mark Udall in Colorado.

They ""continue to support the law, while closing their eyes to all the harm being caused in their own states as a result," Tim Phillips, AFP's president, said.
