More Americans believe more now than they did two years ago that President Donald Trump has the personality and leadership qualities a president should have, but most still do not think so, a new Gallup Poll released Tuesday says.
According to the poll of 1,024 adults conducted April 17-30, 40% of Americans think Trump has the presidential qualities, compared to 33% two years ago. However, 58% said they don't think Trump possesses the necessary qualities.
In comparison, roughly 60% thought former Presidents George W. Bush and Barack Obama had the right presidential qualities at the same point in their presidencies. Neither had ratings lower than 49% at any point while in office.
In other findings:
- 47% said they agree with Trump on issues that matter to them;
- 39% said he's too conservative;
- 8% said he's about right;
- 17% said he's too liberal;
- Most Republicans said he's 'about right';
- 60% of Democrats say Trump is too conservative.
In comparison, Bush in early 2004 was regarded by 39% of being too conservative; about right by 36%; and 18% said he was too liberal.
In early 2012, 51% said Obama's views were too liberal, and in early 1996, 41% said then-President Bill Clinton was too liberal.
The poll carries a margin of error of plus or minus four percentage points.
