The Rev. Franklin Graham Saturday slammed Washington state school officials for suspending Joe Kennedy for praying on the football field, calling it "a shame" that the assistant coach had to watch a game from the stands on Thursday.

"Joe Kennedy is a Marine Corps veteran who served to protect the freedoms of all Americans — and now he’s having to fight for his own religious freedom and constitutional rights here at home," Graham said of the Bremerton High School assistant in a Facebook post.

Graham 63, heads both the Billy Graham Evangelistic Association and the Samaritan's Purse global charity. He is the son of the famed evangelist Billy Graham.

Referring to the Bremerton School District officials who suspended Kennedy, Franklin Graham said, "They told him that he could go hide in the press box or somewhere out of sight if he wanted to pray.

"Oh really? So much for tolerance when it comes to Christians.

"I agree with Coach Kennedy — he should not have to hide his religion," he said.

School officials Wednesday put Kennedy on paid administrative leave because he ignored orders to stop overt religious displays on the field.

Citing past Supreme Court and appeals court cases, officials said they did not want to be seen as endorsing religion.

During Thursday's game, Kennedy hugged players over a fence, and after the game, kneeled down and prayed with a group of people in front of the bleachers.

Bremerton High's Knights won the conference game over the Sequim High School Wolves, 20-27.

Members of the Satanic Temple of Seattle showed up outside the stadium where the game was played, The Seattle Times reports.

Students protested the group's presence by holding up crosses, chanting "Jesus" and yelling at them to go away.

"We need to continue to pray for him and his family in this battle," Graham's post concludes. He also noted the presence of the Satanists.

"In spite of all this, Coach Kennedy still says, 'If you believe in something, you stand up,'" he said. "Let’s ?#‎StandwithCoachKennedy?."
