The man who killed five people and wounded six others after opening fire at the Fort Lauderdale airport last week reportedly planned to visit New York City on New Year's Eve before changing his mind because of the high level of security in place.
According to the New York Post, 26-year-old Esteban Santiago booked a flight to one of the New York City airports for Dec. 31, but the beefed-up security measures in place there forced him to alter his plans and head to the South Florida airport instead.
Upon landing last Friday, Santiago retrieved his only piece of luggage — a case carrying his 9mm handgun and ammunition. Police said he loaded the weapon in the bathroom and then began shooting in the baggage claim area. He was taken into custody after he used all of his ammunition.
Santiago appeared in court Monday and is being held without bail ahead of his next court appearance, scheduled for Jan. 23.
