A new law proposed by a group of Republican senators would mandate the burial or burning of fetal remains following an abortion after over 2,000 fetal remains were found in a garage.
The Dignity for Aborted Children Act comes just after news emerged that the late Dr. Ulrich “George” Klopfer, who provided abortions in Indiana for decades before losing his license three years ago, hoarded 2,246 fetal remains in his garage. The 20-year-old remains were kept in medically sealed bags stored in cardboard boxes at his home in Indiana, and were discovered after his death on September 3 of this year.
Sens. Mike Braun of Indiana, Todd Young of Indiana, Steve Daines of Montana, John Cornyn of Texas, Rick Scott of Florida, Joni Ernst of Iowa, Marsha Blackburn of Tennessee, Roger Wicker of Mississippi, Cindy Hyde-Smith of Mississippi, Thom Tillis of North Carolina, and Jim Inhofe of Oklahoma all co-sponsored the bill. Rep. Jackie Walorski of Indiana is considering submitting a similar bill in the House.
"The discovery of thousands of fetal remains in an Indiana abortionist's home horrified every American who respects the sanctity of life, and highlighted a disturbing trend that Indiana has taken the lead in rectifying," Braun said in a statement to the Washington Examiner.
Braun told the Examiner on Friday that he’s not sure this bill can get through Congress, adding that the states should impose their own restrictions, and that eventually the Supreme Court will have to get involved.
"If we really wanted to get somewhere, the leadership and guidance needs to come from the Supreme Court," he said.
