The FBI has contacted a conservative anti-tax group in connection with the investigation of the shooter at last week's GOP congressional baseball practice, Politico reported.

According to Politico, an unidentified source who attended an Americans for Tax Reform meeting said leader Grover Norquist revealed both he and the policy group were mentioned either in physical or electronic files found among James Hodgkinson's possessions. The Illinois native died following a shootout with police.

Staff from the anti-tax group has been told to reach out to the FBI with any information about Hodgkinson – including whether he ever contacted anyone from the organization, Politico reported.

The FBI's outreach to Americans for Tax Reform suggests authorities are still probing potential political motivations behind the shooting, Politico reported.

According to the FBI, Hodgkinson had camped out in Alexandria, Va., for months before the shooting, which critically injured House Majority Whip Steve Scalise, R-La., and left two police officers, a lobbyist, and a House aide wounded.

In a search of his possessions and social media posts, the FBI discovered Hodgkinson had repeatedly posted "anti-Republican views," but all of his messages were protected First Amendment speech, Politico reported.
