The FBI and Department of Homeland Security warned of growing threats from individuals involved with the white supremacists movement months ago, Foreign Policy reported Monday.

"We assess lone actors and small cells within the white supremacist movement likely will continue to pose a threat of lethal violence over the next year," the FBI and DHS said in a joint intelligence bulletin published in mid-May.

The report comes two days after a "Unite the Right" rally in Charlottesville, Va., turned violent when white supremacists clashed with counter-protestors over the planned removal of a statue honoring Confederate Gen. Robert E. Lee. One person died after a car plowed into a crowd in the city's downtown area and two state troopers who were monitoring the clash were killed in a helicopter crash.

Trump was slammed over the weekend for not immediately condemning white nationalists or white supremacists by name in his initial reaction, but his statements Monday at a press conference were forceful: "Racism is evil and those who cause violence in its name are criminals and thugs, including the KKK, neo-Nazis, white supremacists, and other hate groups that are repugnant to everything we hold dear as Americans."

White supremacists "were responsible for 49 homicides in 26 attacks from 2000 to 2016 … more than any other domestic extremist movement," read the intelligence bulletin.
