The European Justice Commissioner Vera Jourova asked Facebook whether any data harvested by data political firm Cambridge Analytica belonged to European citizens, according to the Live Mint.
"Have any data of EU citizens been affected by the recent scandal?" Jourova wrote, listing one of the five key questions in a letter sent to Facebook chief operating officer Sheryl Sandberg. "If this is the case, how do you intend to inform the authorities and users about it?"
Cambridge Analytica allegedly misused the Facebook data of up to 50 million user profiles and built a software program with the information to profile voters and target them with personalized political ads, working closely with President Donald Trump's election team and the winning Brexit campaign.
"Social networks and digital platforms need to guarantee transparent practices and full protection of citizens' privacy and personal data," the letter said. "EU and national legislation must be respected and enforced."
The EU has given Facebook two weeks to respond to the letter, and asks what steps the social media giant plans to take in the future to prevent a similar incident.
