President Donald Trump's support of the United Kingdom's exit from the European Union spurred one high-ranking official to warn Trump that he will "promote the independence of Ohio and Austin, Texas," if the president continues to call for other nations to follow suit.
"The newly elected U.S. president was happy that the Brexit was taking place and has asked other countries to do the same," European Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker said at a conference for the European People's Party in Malta Thursday, according to Politico. "If he goes on like that I am going to promote the independence of Ohio and Austin, Texas, in the United States of America."
White House press secretary Sean Spicer touted Trump's involvement, saying Wednesday that the president was a "leader in the effort to call Brexit," and that he's "very well steeped in world affairs, especially Europe, NATO, all the issues."
Last February, Juncker said he has "the impression that the new administration does not know the European Union in detail," at an EU leadership meeting.
On Wednesday, Juncker addressed Brexit, saying it "should be the beginning of something new, something better," and that, "we need to continue."
