Former House Majority Leader Eric Cantor, whose 2014 primary loss was blamed on his support for immigration reform, is pairing up with likely Republican presidential candidate Jeb Bush to host a big-money fundraiser in Virginia later this month,
Breitbart reports.
Breitbart, citing an invitation to the Cantor-Bush fundraiser from Republican State Leadership Committee chairman Bill McCollum, a former Florida attorney general, reports the fundraiser will be held Feb. 16 at The Jefferson Hotel in Richmond.
Donors are being asked to pony up $5,000 each – and $25,000 if they want to be a part of the host committee, Breitbart reports.
"They are raising money together for the RSLC, a group both strongly support," Kristy Campbell, a spokeswoman for the former Florida governor, told Breitbart.
"Congressman Cantor and Governor Bush are friends and have known each other for years."
Despite spending millions,
Cantor lost his primary to Dave Brat, an economist opposed to immigration reform — conservatives’ biggest 2014 victory against a GOP establishment candidate.
Bush's choice to appear with Cantor at the fundraiser ahead of what many believe will be his bid for the GOP nomination for president in 2016 comes as CNN reveals remarks Bush made in 2013 that are riling conservatives.
According to CNN, Bush, during a discussion with Univision, said it was "ridiculous" to think children brought to the U.S. by their parents illegally — known as DREAMers — shouldn't have an "accelerated path" to citizenship.
"Those [comments] are definitely not helpful for Mr. Bush," Hogan Gidley, a South Carolina Republican who's advised both Mike Huckabee and Rick Santorum's presidential campaigns, told CNN.
