Elon Musk, the billionaire behind Tesla and SpaceX, said he is opposed to President Donald Trump's move to extend a ban on visas for tech workers and other non-U.S. citizens.

After Monday's announcement that the White House is putting a halt on issuing green cards outside the U.S. through the end of the year, Musk responded with a tweet.

"Very much disagree with this action. In my experience, these skillsets are net job creators. Visa reform makes sense, but this is too broad," he wrote.

The temporary visa ban was enacted as the Trump administration tries to help the economy rebound from coronavirus closures and restrictions. By preventing as many as 525,000 non-citizens from landing jobs in the U.S., the move is designed to help Americans get hired.

The ban applies to H-1B visas, which are used by major American technology companies, and their immediate families, H-2B visas for nonagricultural seasonal workers, J-1 visas for exchange students, and L-1 visas for managers of multinational corporations.

Visa programs were already affected by travel bans the administration put in place earlier this year as the virus spread from China to the United States and beyond.
