Members of the Electoral College will not receive a briefing on Russian involvement in the November election, the Director of National Intelligence said Friday.

In its decision, the agency referenced the Oct. 7 disclosure by the Homeland Security Secretary Jeh Johnson and Director of National Intelligence James Clapper that they were "confident" that "the Russian government directed compromises of emails from U.S. persons and institutions.

"These thefts, as well as disclosures of alleged hacked e-mails by the Guccifer 2.0 persona, were intended to interfere with the U.S. election process," the office said in a statement. "The secretary and DNI also expressed their belief that 'only Russia's senior-most officials could have authorized these activities.'

"We continue to stand by this statement."

The agency said that intelligence officials would brief Congress "once the review is complete" and that the data would be released "to the public consistent with protecting intelligence sources and methods."

A group of electors for Democrat Hillary Clinton called on Clapper to brief them on the matter earlier this month, CNN reports.

The 10 electors were from five states — representing a small number of the 538 electors who are to officially vote for President-elect Donald Trump on Monday.

At his last news conference of the year on Friday, President Barack Obama declined to express an opinion on whether electors should receive any briefing.

"It's the American people's job, and now the electors' job to decide my successor."

Obama called Electoral College as a "vestige" and a "carry-over" from history — adding that "no silver bullet" or "easy fix" could explain Donald Trump's victory last month.

The Associated Press contributed to this report.
