D.C. residents should march July 4 for Congress to render the District of Columbia the 51st state, Del. Eleanor Holmes Norton, D-D.C., tweeted Thursday.

"The District of Columbia pays the nation's highest per capita federal taxes and has fought in every U.S. war. Soldiers from the District still go abroad to fight to defend our freedoms, yet they return home and have no representation in the government they fought to defend."

She added:

"D.C. residents should march on July 4th to remind our country that the war to end Taxation Without Representation – our Revolutionary War – is not yet finished. And it will not be until our nation's capital has equal representation in their own government."

The U.S. House of Representatives on July 24 will reconsider who speaks for D.C. residents, marking the first time in more than a quarter-century that Congress will hold a hearing on D.C. statehood.

"The forum is a chance for D.C. residents, faith-based activists, and members of community groups to hear and speak out on the latest efforts to achieve statehood [for the District] and to build community around this shared goal," Norton's office said in a press release in early July.

Garner's legislation has 151 co-sponsors.
