Sen. Ed Markey charged on Tuesday that the Trump administration 'has no plan' for reunification of families separated at the U.S.-Mexico border.
Markey, a Massachusetts Democrat, told WBUR’s "Morning Edition" he visited immigrant detention and processing centers "see first-hand" how the administration is implementing a court order that all children under 5 are reunited with their parents by next Tuesday and the remaining kids within two weeks.
"What I saw was a shocking discrepancy between what agency officials told us versus what the detainees said. Right now the administrations has no plan or procedures in place for reunifications, even with the deadline approaching from the court order," he said.
"The administration has not given the agencies any guidance. They are still in the dark and there is still no plan in place to reunite these children."
Markey, who made his visit to the border over the weekend, joined a growing chorus of Democratic lawmakers calling for the dismantling and reconstruction of Immigration and Customs Enforcement.
"It’s turned into a massive deportation army. We need to separate ICE’s public safety responsibilities, such as protecting those from human trafficking from its deeply flawed immigration enforcement that does little more than terrorize law abiding immigrant families," Markey told WBUR’s Bob Oakes.
"Just the acronym alone ICE strikes fear in the hearts of immigrants who are simply looking for a better life and a pathway to citizenship."
