President-elect Donald Trump on Monday called the assassination of a Russian ambassador in Turkey a "violation of all rules of civilized order" that "must be universally condemned."

Andrei Karlov was shot and killed in the Turkish capital of Ankara by police officer Mevlüt Mert Altıntaş, who fired a shot into the air before shooting Karlov in the back multiple times. The 22-year-old gunman reportedly shouted in Turkish "We die in Aleppo, you die here," before killing Karlov.

Karlov was visiting a photo exhibit in Ankara when Altintas opened fire. The assassination was celebrated by the Islamic State and, the BBC reported was done apparently in protest to Russia's involvement in the war in Syria.

Secretary of State John Kerry, UK Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson, German Interior Minister Thomas de Maiziere and French President Francois Hollande condemned the attack.
