President Donald Trump reportedly told a member of the Syrian Democratic Council during a brief encounter this week that he supports the Kurds.

According to CNN, Trump was attending a fundraiser at Trump International Hotel in Washington Monday evening when he walked up to Kurdish Leader Ilham Ahmed, who was having dinner with Congressional leaders at the establishment.

"I love the Kurds," Trump reportedly told Ahmed.

Ahmed asked Trump if he would leave Syrian Kurds on their own to be slaughtered by Turkish forces, to which Trump said he would not.

Trump stayed at the table for 10 minutes to chat before leaving, CNN reported.

The U.S. is withdrawing ground troops from Syria, a controversial decision. Critics say it will lead to more bloodshed in Syria, which for years has been plagued by a civil war. It also opens the door for Russia to play a larger role in the war-torn country.
