President Donald Trump on Sunday attempted to insult former New York City mayor Mike Bloomberg by saying that the Democratic presidential candidate wanted to stand on a box during the debates, but risers are a standard part of televised debates, Axios reports.
Trump, who is about 6 foot, three inches tall, has frequently mocked Bloomberg over his below-average height. In an interview with Fox News’ Sean Hannity Sunday night, he said that Bloomberg wanted “a box for the debates to stand on,” to which the Bloomberg campaign said Trump was “lying,” but Axios notes that networks typically provide boxes, known as risers, to candidates.
"The president is lying,” said Julie Wood, the Bloomberg campaign’s national press secretary. “He is a pathological liar who lies about everything: his fake hair, his obesity, and his spray-on tan."
Former Secretary of Housing and Urban Development Julián Castro was photographed standing on a box during the September Democratic debate in Houston, Texas, according to the Washington Examiner, which noted at the time that this is not uncommon.
