Nearly two-thirds of American adults said they disapprove of how President Donald Trump is handling efforts to end the government shutdown, according to the results of a new poll.
Key figures in the ABC News/Washington Post poll:
Trump's job approval rating is at 37 percent, down from 40 percent at the beginning of the year. 58 percent disapprove of the job he's doing.
- 22 percent of Americans said they are inconvenienced by the shutdown. Of that group, Trump's job approval rating is 23 percent.
- 42 percent said they trust House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and the Democrats to handle the issue of border security, with 40 percent saying they trust Trump and Republicans.
- 47 percent said they trust House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and the Democrats to handle the issue of illegal immigration, with 42 percent saying they trust Trump and Republicans.
- 60 percent disapprove of the way Trump is working to end the shutdown, which appears to be ending after he announced Friday afternoon a deal has been struck. 34 percent said they approve of how Trump is handling it.
- 54 percent disapprove of the way Pelosi is working to end the shutdown, while 36 percent disapprove.
The shutdown hit five weeks on Friday. It began Dec. 22 after lawmakers could not agree on funding for a border wall.
