President Donald Trump sent out a tweet on Tuesday harshly criticizing General Motors for announcing its plans to close down factories in the United States.
“Very disappointed with General Motors and their CEO, Mary Barra, for closing plants in Ohio, Michigan and Maryland,” Trump wrote. “Nothing being closed in Mexico & China. The U.S. saved General Motors, and this is the THANKS we get!”
The president also threated the company in the continuation of his tweet.
“We are now looking at cutting all @GM subsidies, including.... for electric cars,” Trump wrote. “General Motors made a big China bet years ago when they built plants there (and in Mexico) - don’t think that bet is going to pay off. I am here to protect America’s Workers!”
The harsh words on Twitter came a day after Trump already had lashed out at GM, telling The Wall Street Journal that he had told Barra “You’re playing around with the wrong person” and that GM “better damn well open a new plant there very quickly,” referring to a factory the company plans to close in Ohio.
Barra explained to the Journal that the company made the decision to act now, despite a healthy economy and GM’s good earnings, to help the company maintain profits through an expected downturn in the American car market and free up money to invest in electric and self-driving vehicles.
“The industry is changing very rapidly,” Barra said. “We think it’s appropriate to get in front of it while the business and the economy are strong.”
