Like many Americans, President Trump enjoys visiting the Sunshine State whenever he needs a little R & R. But if Democrats win the races for both governor and the U.S. senate there on Tuesday, Florida could become his biggest headache -- and the place where the “Trump Train” finally came to a screeching halt.
That could be the president’s worst-case scenario for the midterms, other than losing both the House and the Senate, of course. The prospect of a charismatic young Democratic governor, current Tallahassee Mayor Andrew Gillum, taking over the governorship in a key swing state following two decades of GOP rule is bad enough. Combine that with a victory by longtime Democratic Sen. Bill Nelson over outgoing GOP Gov. Rick Scott, and Trump would find himself without an effective political surrogate in a must-win state in 2020.
