The owners of the luxury fashion line Dolce & Gabbana have ignited a firestorm among gays with recent comments in an Italian magazine supporting traditional marriage and opposing gay adoption and gays' having children by in-vitro fertilization.
Singers Elton John and Ricky Martin, both openly gay and parents of children born through IVF procedures, as well as a host of gay activists have launched a boycott against D&G and a Twitter site #boycottdolcegabbana, in reaction to the statements of Domenico Dolce and Stefano Gabbana, the
Christian Post reports.
In an interview with the Italian magazine Panorama, the two designers triggered protests with their comments, especially those involving IVF.
"The family is not a fad. In it there is a supernatural sense of belonging," Gabbana said, the Christian Post reported.
Dolce told the magazine that procreation should be "an act of love," adding, "I'm not convinced by those I call the children of chemicals; synthetic children. Wombs for rent; sperm chosen from a catalogue. Psychiatrists are not ready to confront the effects of this experimentation."
"No chemical offsprings and rented uterus. Life has a natural flow. There are things that should not be changed," Dolce said.
Gabbana said, "We oppose gay adoptions. The only family is the traditional one. I am opposed to the idea of a child growing up with two gay parents. A child needs a mother and a father. I could not imagine my childhood without my mother. I also believe that it is cruel to take a baby away from its mother,"
NJ.com reported.
On his
Instagram account, John blasted, "How dare you refer to my beautiful children as 'synthetic,' and shame on you for wagging your judgmental little fingers at IVF, a miracle that has allowed legions of loving people, both straight and gay, to fulfill their dream of having children. Your archaic thinking is out of step with the times, just like your fashions. I shall never wear Dolce and Gabbana ever again. #BoycottDolceGabbana."
John has two children with his husband, David Furnish, both born through IVF.
Martin ripped the pair, who are openly gay and once were a couple, saying on his
Twitter account, "ur voices R 2powerfull 2B spreading so much h8 Wake up, Its 2015 Luv urselves guys #boycottdolcegabbana "
Martin also has twin children, conceived through IVF.
Ruth Hunt, of Britain's LGBT equality group Stonewall, told the Christian Post, "We strongly dispute the comments made by Dolce and Gabbana. Being a good parent has nothing to do with sexual orientation or whether a child has two mums or two dads. The important thing is a loving family, whatever its makeup."
Gabbana told the Italian magazine, "You can’t have everything in life. It’s also beautiful to be deprived of something. Life has a natural course. There are things that cannot be modified. The family is one of them."
Backing off their quotes somewhat, the pair later said, "It was never our intention to judge other people’s choices," the
New York Post reported. We do believe in freedom and love."
Dolce, saying he was raised in a traditional Sicilian family "made up of a mother, a father and children," added, "I am very well aware of the fact that there are other types of families and they are as legitimate as the one I’ve known."
