Efforts to ease tensions between the United States and North Korea through diplomacy are in danger as talks break down due to President Donald Trump's repeated public attacks on Kim Jong Un, NBC News is reporting.

Joseph Yun, an American diplomat to North Korea has been looking for help from Congressional lawmakers in an attempt to convince the administration to prioritize diplomacy over rhetoric, according to the network news.

Yun, whose diplomatic efforts are said to be on their "last legs," is growing increasingly frustrated by the failure to get the message through to the administration, NBC News reported.

"It is not so much that North Korea is shutting down, it's that the message from the U.S. government is, 'surrender without a fight or surrender with a fight,'" a U.S. official told NBC News.

Yun has been warning of a breakdown in talks during meetings with lawmakers on Capitol Hill and is looking for a way to restart the diplomatic efforts.

And Foreign Relations Committee Chairman Sen. Bob Corker, R-Tenn., who has been locked in a increasingly bitter feud with Trump, has accused the president of undercutting diplomatic efforts, NBC News said.

"When you kneecap that effort you really move our country into a binary choice which could lead to a world war," Corker said. "So yes, I want him to support diplomatic efforts, not embarrass and really malign efforts that are underway."

In recent months, Trump has escalated his war of words with the North Korean leader and even dubbed him "Little Rocket Man," the network news noted.

Meanwhile, National Security Adviser H.R. McMaster said the administration is "in a race to resolve this short of military action."

"We are not out of time," he said. "But we are running out of time."

Trump will leave on a 12-day trip to Asia early next month and will speak to U.S. and South Korean troops outside of Seoul, The Washington Post reported. His visit will include five nations.
