Durbin: GOP Leaders 'Fed Up for a Long Time' With Trump

There are cracks in the armor of President Donald Trump's administration, as several key Republicans are starting to speak out against him, Senate Minority Whip Dick Durbin said Tuesday.

"I've noticed a few things recently that I haven't seen before," the Illinois Democrat told MSNBC's "Morning Joe," pointing out specifically the bipartisan resolution that passed Congress concerning Trump's decision to pull troops out of Syria.

"This is a crack in the armor of this administration that I have not witnessed before," said Durbin, adding that Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell's Washington Post opinion piece condemning Trump for his Syria "There clearly is evidence that even within the highest ranks of the Republican Party on Capitol Hill, there's second thoughts about how much longer they can tolerate this man," Durbin said.

He added that Republican leaders have been "fed up for a long time" with Trump, but "they're afraid of him."

"They're afraid that this president is going to turn around and challenge them in a primary," said Durbin. "I saw one Washington senators saying he was going to break with the president on a key issue. Within 48 hours he backed off from that from the threats from the White House."

He added that he wanted to "salute" Sen. Mitt Romney, R-Utah, for his "courage in stepping up" to speak out against Trump, as "being loyal to this country is first and foremost."

However, when it comes to Ukraine and the accusation that Trump demanded information on Joe and Hunter Biden before releasing military aid, Republicans "look at their shoes" because they don't have any good answers.

"No president should be conspiring or working with a foreign leader to influence a U.S. election," he said. "That just isn't a policy I've dreamed up. It happens to be the law of the United States of America. They understand this law."
