Two Florida congressman are introducing a bill to establish safeguards for people who vote by mail, the South Florida Sun-Sentinel is reporting.
The bill, called the Protecting American Voters Act, is set to be formally presented on Tuesday by Reps. Ted Deutch and Alcee Hastings, both Democrats. Here are the highlights of the bill:
- Two attempts will be made by election officials to notify voters when their ballots are being rejected because their signatures do not match.
- Those reviewing signatures will get formal training.
- Voters whose signatures don’t match, will have 10 days to verify their identity.
Deutch and Hastings noted research by University of Florida political scientist Daniel Smith, who said that 1.2% of vote-by-mail ballots were rejected this year in the state
