Alan Dershowitz: Strongest Ally in the Middle East Is Israel

By    |   Saturday, 20 September 2014 09:52 PM EDT

Harvard Law School professor Alan Dershowitz said on Saturday that the strongest ally in the Middle East in battling the Islamic State (ISIS) is Israel, but that the country cannot be seen as fighting against the Arab world with the United States.

"ISIS is very similar to Hamas," Dershowitz told former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee on his Fox News program, referring to the terrorist organization. "They use terrorism and they use the media.

"They put their children in harm's way and induce Israel to fire and kill children and hold them up to the media, and they are embedding their soldiers among civilians.

"We'll have to learn how to fight the scourge of terrorism with the only democracy in the Middle East," Dershowitz said. "What country is providing more help than Jordan and Saudi Arabia and Iran? It's Israel.

"They can't surface because they don't want to make it seem like an American-Israeli fight against the Arab world."

The Islamic State has so far beheaded three Westerners, American journalists James Foley and Steven Sotloff, and British aid worker David Haines, posting their executions on the Internet.

Dershowitz told Huckabee that the United States must determine the ultimate goal of the war on terror, to keep America safe, and then find ways of doing so without trampling on constitutional rights.

He is the author of a new e-book, "Terror Tunnels: The Case for Israel's Just War Against Hamas." Dershowitz also is a Newsmax columnist.

"The war on terrorism is unique, and the framers of the Constitution didn't have that in mind," he said. "We have to adapt laws, even interpretations of the Constitution, to the new realities.

"We have to have ways to prevent our citizens from going abroad with passports and training to be terrorists and coming back and blowing up Times Square and great places in America."
