House Democrats are considering how they can find out what was said during President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin’s private meeting in Helsinki last year, Axios reported on Wednesday.
According to a Democratic congressman who spoke to reporters, members of his party in the House are discussing how to do that, whether it is by “subpoenaing the notes or subpoenaing the interpreter or other steps.”
The White House never revealed what the two leaders discussed during their two-hour meeting behind closed doors in Helsinki, according to TPM.
No staff were present, except for interpreters.
The attempt to look into the meeting is part of a House Democratic plan for an extensive probe of Trump and Russia, with a focus on money laundering, according to Axios.
Congress plans interviews with new witnesses, and may go back to previous ones who "stonewalled" under the Republican majority in the last Congress, according to the Democratic source.
The plan by Democrats is not only to depend on special counsel Robert Mueller’s investigation, but to use their subpoena power to produce probes of their own that will include multiple committees and dramatic public hearings that could last into 2020.
The source added that the president is also in no position to draw red lines regarding a look into the Trump family finances.
