Nobody wants to see another government shutdown, and lawmakers will cut some kind of deal that will keep the United States safe, Rep. Debbie Dingell said Tuesday.
"I don't think anybody wants to see what we just went through for 35 days," the Michigan Democrat told Fox Business' "Mornings With Maria." "It hurt the economy...need to strengthen our borders at both sides. Everybody talks about the southern border. I've got this northern border too which just had a huge human trafficking problem."
Dingell also commented about the growing number of Democrats considering presidential races in 2020, and about whether former Starbucks CEO Howard Schultz can mount a successful run as an independent.
"I think it's viable," she said. "He has the money to spend it. I think he would hurt the Democrats. I'm trying to step back. I want to see who is going to emerge, who has people skills. This is dangerous. Nobody believed Donald Trump could become president. People thought I was crazy. And I still think he could get reelected and if we do not run a strong campaign and we don't have somebody like that that pulls votes off."
If Democrats hope to elect a president, they must have a platform rather than just politically bickering, said Dingell.
"A lot of people are hurting in the country, just working men and women who want to know we actually care about them," she said. "They're scared about healthcare. They're scared about escalating health costs."
