Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y. said President Donald Trump’s pick of David Bernhardt for interior secretary “is a serious threat to our national’s public lands, wildlife and natural resources.”
Schumer’s comments came in two tweets on Monday night.
He wrote: “David Bernhardt might be the most special-interest-driven nominee President @realDonaldTrump could have selected to be the U.S. Interior Secretary. And that’s saying something considering he would be following former Secretary Ryan Zinke.”
Schumer added: “Mr. Bernhardt’s nomination is a serious threat to our nation’s public lands, wildlife, and natural resources, and I fear he would fail to fulfill Interior’s role in our country’s treaty and trust obligations to Native Nations.”
Trump said on Monday that he’s nominating Bernhardt, who is described as a Washington veteran with lobbying ties to U.S. energy companies. He is currently the acting Interior Department secretary
