New 'Risk' Czar Appointed to Improve IRS Internal Controls

By    |   Wednesday, 29 May 2013 02:41 PM EDT

Acting IRS Commissioner Daniel Werfel is moving to create new internal controls at the controversial agency in the wake of the targeting scandal.

In his first move, Werfel has installed David Fisher, a former Government Accountability Office official, as the IRS' new chief risk officer, according to Politico.

Werfel made the announcement Tuesday in a note to agency employees, declaring the appointment is "necessary for restoring the integrity of IRS operations."

Werfel described Fisher as a highly regarded public official who "has been recognized for his accountability and high professional integrity."

According to Politico, Werfel, who was appointed barely a week ago by President Barack Obama, has moved aggressively to take control of the agency, which is under fire for placing more scrutiny on tea party and other conservative group applications for tax-exempt status.

Last week, Werfel placed Lois Lerner, the head of the agency's office at the center of the scandal, on administrative leave following her refusal to testify before Congress.
