More than 3,000 federal inmates were slated to be released from prison Friday as part of the Trump administration's criminal justice reform bill signed into law last year.

As The Wall Street Journal noted, roughly 3,100 prisoners will walk free. President Donald Trump signed the First Step Act in December to help reduce recidivism by reforming the federal prison system.

The law includes job training programs to help inmates gain valuable skills they can use once they're released and also sentence-reduction efforts.

Friday's release indicates the Trump administration is serious about trying to erase part of the crime crackdown efforts from the 1980s and 1990s.

Also included in the First Step Act is a program that will assess what can be done for federal prisoners that will help them avoid committing other crimes once they are set free.

Friday's release mostly includes prisoners in halfway houses and those who are serving time via home confinement.

Last week, Attorney General William Barr praised the reforms that have been implemented under the First Step Act, saying he's "impressed with how it's going."
