Sen. Cory Booker, D-N.J. said he will look to women first as a running mate if he becomes the presidential nominee of the Democratic Party.

Booker made his comments during a Tuesday interview on “The Rachel Maddow Show” on MSNBC.

Asked if he would commit to naming a woman as a running mate, Booker replied: “I'm not going to make any specific commitments. I believe there should be a woman president right now and worked very hard to get one.

“We have such a great field of leaders, I think you'll rarely see a Democratic ticket anymore without gender diversity, race diversity. I think it’s something we should have. I'm not going to box myself in.

However, Booker stressed he would be “looking to women first” if he locks up the nomination.

Politico noted that if Booker were to win the nomination and pick a woman as his running mate, it would be the fourth time a female was part of a major party’s presidential ticket. Hillary Clinton was the party’s presidential nominee in 2016. Geraldine Ferraro was the vice presidential nominee for the Democrats in 1984. Sarah Palin was the GOP’s vice presidential nominee in 2008.
