A Democrat and vocal critic of President Donald Trump said it doesn't make sense politically for Democrats to talk about impeachment right now regarding Trump and the Russia investigation.
Sen. Cory Booker, D-N.J., told MSNBC Wednesday night his party needs to slow down and let the facts lead the way.
"I'm one of those folks that says let's go where the evidence leads. Right now, we have a special counsel that is doing a thorough investigation. Let's not get ahead of our skis," Booker said. "Let's make sure we support the special counsel's investigation."
Regarding talk of impeaching Trump, whose campaign is being investigated by special counsel Robert Mueller over claims of Russia collusion, Booker said now is not the time to throw that word around.
"I think that we undermine our position as Democrats if we are reaching out now for impeachment, which is just going to whip up more of the political divisions, the political debates," Booker said. "I know I'll take criticism for that, but that's OK.
"We need to have sober minds, fact-based conclusions, conclusions drawn from evidence that's presented. If we protect the special counsel especially, this investigation is going to come to a conclusion. And there are going to be facts, and we can base our actions based upon those facts."
Mueller's probe reached as high as Trump's personal lawyer Michael Cohen last week when FBI agents raided Cohen's two offices, apartment, and hotel room.
Many Democrats are calling for Trump to be impeached. Former FBI director James Comey is on a national media tour to promote his new book and said it's possible Trump was compromised by the Russians.
