It is unlikely that the severe quarantining that has occurred in China to try and stop the spread of the coronavirus will take place in the United States, National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases director Dr. Anthony Fauci told CBS’s “60 Minutes” on Sunday.
"I don't imagine that the degree of the draconian nature of what the Chinese did would ever be either feasible, applicable, doable or whatever you wanna call it in the United States," Fauci said. "I don't think you could do that.”
However, Fauci said that “the idea of social distancing" is something to seriously consider, "depending upon where we are in a particular region of the country."
Fauci also commented on criticism of the Trump administration for initially downplaying the extent of the outbreak, saying that the danger of minimizing the size of the crisis is that “you might get people to be complacent, number one. Number two when bad things happen your credibility is lost because you've downplayed something."
