Liberty University president Jerry Falwell Jr. on Friday spread a conspiracy theory about the coronavirus being created by North Korea during an appearance on Fox News’ “Fox & Friends."

“The owner of a restaurant asked me last night. He said ‘You remember the North Korean leader promised a Christmas present for America back in December'” Falwell said, according to The Daily Beast.

“Could it be they got together with China and this is that present? I don’t know, but it really was something strange going on.”

The coronavirus, known officially as COVID-19, was first identified in Wuhan, China. No connection to North Korea has been reported.

Earlier, Falwell Jr. said that it’s “strange” that “so many are overreacting” to the coronavirus outbreak, which the World Health Organization has declared a pandemic.

“The H1N1 virus,” also known as swine flu, “in 2009, killed 17,000 people. It was the flu, also, I think. And there was not the same hype. It was—you just didn't see it on the news 24/7. And it makes you wonder if there's a political reason for that,” Falwell said.

“Impeachment didn’t work, and the Mueller Report didn’t work, and article 25 didn’t work, and so maybe now this is their next attempt to get” President Donald Trump, he added.
