Baseball fans at the fifth game of the World Series at Nationals Field in Washington D.C. Sunday should not have chanted "lock him up" at President Donald Trump during the fifth game of the World Series Sunday, as his office deserves respect, Sen. Chris Coons said Monday.
"I have a hard time with the idea of a crowd on a globally televised sporting event chanting 'lock him up' about our president," the Delaware Democrat told CNN's "New Day." "I frankly think the office of the president deserves respect, even when the actions of our president at times don't."
Sunday night, Trump was cheered by some supporters when he was shown on National Park's video screen during the game, which he attended with wife Melania and a large group of Republican lawmakers. However, he was booed by others, many chanting to "lock him up," echoing the call made by Trump supporters during 2016 campaign rallies to "lock her up" in reference to Hillary Clinton.
"I certainly hope that we won't hear 'lock him up' chants at Democratic rallies or at our convention," said Coons. "I think that's one of the most regrettable, even at times despicable, actions by candidate Trump when he was running for president in 2016."
The senator said such calls remind him of "of things that happen in countries where rule of law is unknown or unestablished," and he does not find the jeer "constructive or helpful."
"I can understand why crowds in Washington would feel a lot of animus towards our president given a lot of things that he's done," said Coons.
