Most of his fellow Republicans haven't felt that way, with Congress poised to reject the deal, though President Barack Obama already has secured enough votes to sustain a promised veto.
"One of the great concerns the opposition has is that we're leaving open a lane for the Iranians to go back to creating a nuclear weapon in 10 or 15 years, but we are forgetting the reality they have been on the superhighway for the last 10 years to create a nuclear weapon or nuclear weapons program with no speed limit," Powell said.
To skeptics worried that Iran won't comply with the deal, Powell pointed out that one of his former bosses, President Ronald Reagan, held that America must "trust but verify" when dealing with the Russian nuclear program.
"With respect to the Iranians — don't trust, never trust, and always verify," he said.
