Attorneys for quarterback Colin Kaepernick are expected to try to subpoena President Donald Trump and Vice President Mike Pence in the player’s ongoing fight with the NFL, Yahoo Sports is reporting.
The website said lawyers for Kaepernick, who is a free agent, want the two to testify in his grievance alleging NFL team owners colluded to keep him out of the league.
The Hill noted the player was the first to start kneeling during the national anthem to protest racial injustice.
And Yahoo Sports reported that recent disclosures show multiple owners had direct talks with Trump about players kneeling during the anthem.
According to The Hill, Kaepernick’s grievance, filed last year, stated Trump and Pence "engaged in various public relations stunts designed to retaliate against Mr. Kaepernick and other players that have joined in Kaepernick’s peaceful protest."
Trump this week canceled a White House ceremony with the Philadelphia Eagles that would have honored the Super Bowl champions. The Hill noted no Eagles player knelt during the anthem over the past season.
