Most Americans don't trust what they hear from official White House communications, according to a new CNN poll released Tuesday afternoon.
The survey of 1,639 adults revealed 71% trust only some or nothing of what they're hearing from the White House, marking almost the same level of trust, 68%, they felt in late 2017 as President Donald Trump wrapped up his first year in office.
Nine percent of the respondents in the current poll, conducted for CNN by SSRS from Sept. 5-9, said they trust almost everything they hear, and 19% said they trust most of what they hear.
The levels of trust were divided along party lines, according to the poll, which carried a 3.2-point margin of error:
- 58% of Republicans said they trust everything they hear;
- 65% of independents trust only some or less;
- 52% of Democrats said they don't trust anything.
The poll also showed that six out of 10 Americans polled said Trump doesn't deserve reelection and that most people do not think he's doing a good job keeping his campaign promises.
The numbers of people who said Trump should not be reelected was greater than the numbers recorded in polls of his predecessors, with an October 2003 USA Today poll showing 52% thought George W. Bush should not be reelected. In 2011, a Gallup poll showed numbers in the low 50s for Barack Obama.
However, the number of registered voters who do think Trump deserves reelection came up from two years ago, from 35% in November 2017 to 39% now. Also, among poeple who are the most enthusiastic about voting, 43% said the president deserves a second term, but 55% said he shouldn't be reelected.
Trump's approval rating stayed about the same as it was in mid-August, with 39% approving and 55% disapproving.
The poll also showed the following ratings:
- 59% disapprove of the way Trump is handling immigration
- 52% said Trump's policies do too much to limit immigration
- 24% said his policies were about right;
- 20% said they don't go far enough.
