The Bill, Hillary and Chelsea Clinton Foundation was subpoenaed by State Department investigators last fall for documents related to work that required government approval and about Clinton's longtime aide Huma Abedin's work, The Washington Post reports.

For six months in 2012, Abedin worked simultaneously for the State Department, the Clinton Foundation and Teneo Holdings, a consulting firm with ties to the Clintons.

The Post reported that the full scope of the investigation was not clear from the correspondence it viewed, but it quoted a foundation source who said the foundation itself was not the focus of the probe.

The State inspector general's office would not confirm that assessment.

The probe is the fourth investigation tied to Hillary Clinton, The Daily Caller noted.

Clinton last month called a Fox News report that the probe was looking at ties between the foundation and the State Department "unsourced" and "irresponsible" that had "no basis," the Post noted.

Both Bill and Hillary Clinton have said there is no merit to Republican allegations that foreign officials and groups donated money to the foundation during Hillary Clinton's stint as secretary of state during Barack Obama's first presidential term to curry favor in the event Hillary Clinton is elected president. All donors, they insist, were concerned about the foundation's humanitarian programs around the world.

Republicans, including Senate Judiciary Committee Chairman Charles E. Grassley of Iowa, also have said Abedin's multiple job titles while working at State were a conflict of interest.
