Civil rights advocates and black and Latino students filed a lawsuit against New Jersey on Thursday, claiming the Garden State has one of the "most segregated" public school systems in the United States.
The suit, brought by the Latino Action Network, the NAACP New Jersey State Conference, and other plaintiffs alleges that the ongoing segregation violates the constitutional rights of hundreds of thousands of students, philly.com reports.
New Jersey has been "complicit" in creating and maintaining "one of the most segregated public school systems in the nation," charges the lawsuit, which says a growing number of blacks and Latinos attend schools that are almost entirely nonwhite.
"New Jersey’s segregation results from a longstanding failure of state educational policy that’s legally and morally indefensible," former state Supreme Court Justice Gary Stein said at a news conference announcing the lawsuit.
A spokesman for Gov. Phil Murphy said he could not comment on the action, but "is deeply committed to boosting diversity in our schools."
