Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer said Friday that he told President Donald Trump that he did not want White House senior policy adviser Stephen Miller in on their last-minute White House meeting on immigration earlier this month to try to avert a federal government shutdown.

"I had suggested when [Trump] called that we just have four people in the room: myself, my chief of staff, Mike Lynch, his chief of staff, Gen. [John] Kelly, and the president," the New York Democrat told The New York Times in a podcast.

"And I said, 'If you’re going to have Stephen Miller there or somebody like that, it’s not going to work.'

"And he agreed," Schumer said.

Trump and Schumer met over lunch last Friday to discuss a permanent fix to the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program of young illegal aliens, during which Schumer proposed limited funding for a wall on the U.S. border with Mexico.

The president spurned the deal — and a stalemate over the issue in the Senate ultimately led to a two-day shutdown that ended Monday.

Miller, 32, a former top Senate aide to now-Attorney General Jeff Sessions, has long taken a hard line on immigration policy — and he has openly sparred with White House reporters over the issue, including CNN's Jim Acosta last August.

Sen. Lindsey Graham, the South Carolina Republican who was part of another DACA proposal that Trump rejected before the shutdown, said Sunday that Miller was complicating the president's efforts to negotiate an immigration deal with Congress.

"Every time we have a proposal, it is only yanked back by staff members," Graham told reporters at the Capitol. "As long as Stephen Miller is in charge of negotiating immigration, we're going nowhere."

In his Times podcast Friday, Schumer said that describing Miller as a "'hardline conservative' would be putting it kindly."

He said that he and Trump spent 90 minutes discussing a possible immigration deal, including as much as 20 minutes on a wall.

Schumer told the podcast that he agreed to the wall funding in exchange for a DACA plan because he believed "it’s going to be next to impossible to actually build the wall."

The Democrat rescinded the offer Tuesday.
