One day after praising President Donald Trump for how he handled this week's North Korea negotiations, Sen. Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., lashed out at him Friday for his comments about the late Otto Warmbier.
Warmbier was arrested and convicted of trying to steal a propaganda poster during a college trip to North Korea in 2016. Less than a year and a half later, North Korea returned him to the United States in a comatose state. He died shortly after.
On Thursday, Trump said he took North Korean leader Kim Jong Un at his word when the latter indicated he had nothing to do with Warmbier's death while he served a sentence of 15 years hard labor.
Schumer took offense to Trump's comment.
"President @realDonaldTrump is once again simply deciding to take a cruel and brutal dictator at his word," Schumer wrote on Twitter. "He owes Otto Warmbier's parents an apology. Now."
Warmbier's parents released a statement Friday morning that also condemned Trump's remarks, saying that Kim was responsible for their son's death.
