New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie's declining approval ratings reflect a growing uncertainty about his political future on the national stage, New Jersey's
Asbury Park Press reported.
In the latest polls, the percentage of people who approve of the job he is doing is similar to those who disapprove, while the percentage who have no opinion is on the rise.
Specifically, the Quinnipiac University poll and the Monmouth University/Asbury Park Press Poll both give Christie a 46 percent approval rating. In Quinnipiac, 45 percent disapprove, while 42 percent disapprove in the Monmouth University poll.
"The governor's numbers have dropped, while people saying they're not sure about him have increased," Monmouth University Polling Institute director Patrick Murray told the Asbury Park Press.
"That's the kind of 'don't knows' you normally see earlier in a career, when people aren't sure what's going on. Right now, that has a lot to do with all the presidential buzz."
A growing number of people are unhappy about the amount of time he is spending outside of the state as chairman of the Republican Governors Association.
"Why doesn’t he stay home and tend to the job we elected him to do?" said one of the newspaper's readers.
Christie has been under fire as of late for his
refusal to back New York GOP gubernatorial candidate Rob Astorino, having described the race as a "lost cause."
Texas GOP Gov. Rick Perry, meanwhile, drew a comparison to his own activities in support of Astorino's campaign.
"I have twice been the head of the Republican Governors Association," Perry said, according to the Asbury Park Press. "I tried to help as many governors as I could across the country. I'm going to come help conservative individuals who believe in freedom…Everybody gets to make their own decisions, and my decision was to help Rob."
