The most important takeaway from former special counsel Robert Mueller's testimony was that Russia attempted to interfere in the 2016 election, again in 2018, and is "continuing to do it even today," Sen. Chris Coons said Thursday.
"In the Senate, we had a hearing on the judiciary committee earlier this week, where the FBI Director (Christopher Wray), President (Donald) Trump's personally chosen FBI director, repeated that same message, that we need to be working on securing our 2020 elections," the Delaware Democrat said on Fox News' "America's Newsroom."
He noted that he will be at the Delaware State Fair on Friday, where he'll get to examine the state's new election machines.
"We were one of five states that had no paper trail to audit the outcomes of our elections," said Coons. "We've just purchased new election machinery with the grant funding that was made available two years ago to states. I think that is something we should be working on."
The senator also said he thinks it was important that Mueller detailed ways in which Trump and his senior team tried to interfere with his election.
"I think it was an important and appropriate investigation and I think the fact that special counsel Mueller was able to complete his investigation is something we all should be proud of," said Coons. Meanwhile, at the time Mueller was testifying, the Senate Foreign Relation Committee was hearing from a senior State Department official about legislation Trump could try to use if he chooses to start a war with Iran.
He added that there should be lines of communication open with Iran so that some "rogue element" doesn't draw the countries into war.
