New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie is increasingly unpopular with voters in his state, with 78 percent registering their disapproval, according to a Quinnipiac poll released Tuesday.

Here are the results:

  • Approve of job Christie is doing: 17 percent.
  • Disapprove of Christie performance: 78 percent.

More people disapprove of Christie since Dec. 6, 2016. At that time, his disapproval rating was at 77 percent, which was then the lowest rating for any governor in any state in 20 years of Quinnipiac polling.

Voters in Christie's own party disapprove of his job performance, but to a smaller degree.

Among Republican voters:

  • Approve: 39 percent.
  • Disapprove: 53 percent.

"It's interesting, in an unfriendly way, to wonder how low Gov. Christopher Christie's job-approval numbers might drop," Quinnipiac University Poll assistant director Mickey Carroll said.

According to Carroll, any potential future governors face an uphill battle.

"Following Gov. Christie, who — popular or unpopular — has dominated New Jersey news from the day he took office, the 2017 contenders are all but anonymous," according to Carroll.

The Quinnipiac poll reported 70 percent of voters were not familiar with one contender, Democratic businessman Phil Murphy, and 61 percent had not heard enough about Republican Lt. Gov. Kim Guadagno.

The poll was conducted among 1,240 New Jersey voters from Jan. 26 to Jan. 30, with a margin of error of plus or minus 2.8 points.

In 2015, Christie said Trump's call to ban Muslims from entering the United States was "ridiculous," but Christie had not commented about Trump's immigration ban that was enacted Friday, according to Asbury Park Pressbefore telling an ABC affiliate Tuesday in N.Y.: "The rollout of this executive order was terrible."
