Rep. Roy Bypasses Question on Move to Oust Speaker

By    |   Sunday, 24 March 2024 03:53 PM EDT

Rep. Chip Roy Sunday wouldn't comment on whether he'd back a motion calling for House Speaker Mike Johnson to vacate his seat, calling it "palace drama," but he did say he thinks the Louisiana Republican "was wrong" to back the $1.2 trillion government funding bill passed by the House last week with less than 72 hours to review it.

"At the end of the day right now, what I want to do is try to make sure the American people can win the end of this rainbow," the Texas Republican said on CNN's "State of the Union," reports The Hill. "This bill has now been passed. We're spending money that we don't have or can rack up more debt. I disagree with that. I want to focus now on securing the border in the United States. I want Israel funding."

He also pointed out that he did not support the motion to vacate last year used to remove then-Speaker Kevin McCarthy from his seat.

"It was a mistake. Kevin was actually honoring most of the agreement that we came up with," said Roy. "We were actually having bills that we had 72 hours to read. You know what? That got violated this last week. Mike was wrong."

The motion to vacate was filed Friday by Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene, R-Ga., over the speaker's backing of the funding bill.

Meanwhile, Roy said that Johnson should not bring a bill to approve funding for Ukraine to the House floor unless there is an agreement to "properly" care for Israel and "do what we're supposed to secure the border of the United States."
