A Chicago police commander was killed Tuesday afternoon after being shot multiple times while he was assisting a tactical team at a state government office building downtown, according to the Chicago Sun-Times.

Superintendent Eddie Johnson identified the officer as Paul Bauer, a commander in the 18th District. Bauer, a member of the mounted patrol, was promoted to commander in 2015.

Spokesman Anthony Guglielmi told the Associated Press the off-duty officer was shot around 3 p.m. ET at the James R. Thompson Center. Sources told the Chicago Tribune a suspect was taken into custody for questioning.

Noreen Janko, a passerby, told the Tribune she heard about five shots when she was walking back to her office building across the street from the Thompson Center.

"I heard the gunshots go off, about five shots, and then the stairs there to the pedway, I think they have the guy cornered because they lock those doors down there," Janko said. "So they took him with shackles and then they put him in the squad. Then the ambulance came, about five minutes (later), they brought out a guy who was shot. He was on the stretcher, there was blood and they were doing (CPR)."
