A 26-year-old man who died Thursday from a gunshot wound to the head during protests in Charlotte the night before was shot by "a man with a raised pistol" — not a police officer, a website news writer said.
"I didn't see the moment that the shot was fired, but I heard," Ryan James, who said that he was a correspondent for The Daily Beast covering the unrest, told Megyn Kelly on Fox News. "It was a single shot."
James said he was about 10 feet from the shooting.
"I immediately turned my head in the direction of the shot and saw a man with a raised pistol turn and run," he said. "I didn't get a good look at him because he turned as I turned to look.
"But I saw someone with a pistol turn around and run.
Justin Carr, who was shot in the head about 8:30 p.m. Wednesday, died Thursday. He had been on life support after the shooting during protests spurred by Tuesday's shooting of an African-American man by police.
City officials said Carr was a victim of civilian-on-civilian violence, though social media erupted with accusations that he had been shot by a police officer.
James said he could only describe the shooter as "a black man with dreadlocks. That's all I can say.
"It was not a police officer," he added. "I know what I saw.
"This was protester-on-protester violence."
