A delegation of Catholic bishops traveled to the U.S.-Mexico border over the weekend to get a firsthand look at how immigrant families who are crossing over illegally are being treated.
"The bishops are visiting here so they can stop and look and talk to people and understand, especially the suffering of many who are amongst us," Bishop Daniel Flores of Brownsville, Texas, told the Catholic News Service.
"That's what the Lord taught us: To listen and then respond to the plan, the Christian plan, and to give hope to the poorest and neediest, to tell them that the Christian people have not forgotten them . . .
"Let's ask the Lord to allow us to see with open eyes to respond with compassionate hearts. We can be a country of laws without being a nation that lacks compassion."
The two-day visit which began Sunday and is being led by Cardinal Daniel DiNardo, president of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops, comes in the wake of the widespread condemnation of children being separated from the parents – a practice recently ended by President Donald Trump.
